Mr. Ed Wilson, President

Fox Television Network

Dear Mr. Wilson,

A week ago today the Polish American community began a letter-writing campaign to Fox Television regarding a scurrilous and deeply offensive comment made by a character on Fox’s “Back to You” sitcom.

Although some individuals have received letters from Fox, no public apology has been issued by your network. I must add that the so-called apology contained in the letters from Fox only adds insult to injury – “if you so totally lack any sense of humor than, geeze, sorry, whatever”.

Yes, Mr. Wilson, that is how those letters are being construed.

I am a producer and host of a Polish language talk radio aired daily for the past 18 years in the Chicago metropolitan area.

As my listeners inform me, they will continue their attempts to convince Fox Television that what occurred on the November 14 episode of “Back to You” was not the mindless blather of a mindless “equal opportunity offender”, but the articulation of a line written by a well educated but ill-intentioned person.

Mr. Wilson, here is what we feel would be the only satisfactory resolution: a full, public, unqualified apology aired before, during or after the next “Back to You” episode.

We expect this matter to be approached with the same level of seriousness and sensitivity as are customarily afforded those grievances that are expressed by more vocal and, thus far, more active groups.

Having learned from those groups, my listeners suggest and I concur, that our next step (if we continue to receive less than satisfactory responses from Fox) would be to turn our attentions to the sponsors of Fox Television.

I am attaching a letter I had written to the Chicago Tribune, which might help you understand why Poles and Americans of Polish descent felt so deeply insulted and humiliated by a slanderous remark, poorly veiled as base satire.

I look forward to hearing from you soon. My show, “Otwarty Mikrofon – Open Mike” aires from 5pm – 7 pm Central Time. It would be great to be able to inform my listeners at that time that Fox intends to retract and sincerely apologize for those offensive comments.

Sincerely yours,

Lucia Sliwa

The Honorable Barack Obama

United States Senate

Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator Obama,

On November 14, 2007 Fox Television (Channel 32 in Chicago) broadcast an outrageously offensive historical lie veiled as comedic banter, which only makes it all the more insidious (“….it’s in your Polish blood, like kielbasa and collaborating with the Nazis”).

Needless to say, the comment, although voiced by, as Fox TV informed us “an equal opportunity offender”, was written by a well-educated team of writers and vetted by Fox producers.

The Polish-American community found this remark to be slanderous and deeply offensive. For the past week we have been engaged in a letter-writing campaign hoping to elicit a public, sincere and unqualified apology from Fox Television. This has not happened.

Why would we find a remark uttered by, as Fox claims, a clueless and ignorant person to be unacceptable? Because we are well aware that a large segment of our society derives it’s knowledge of history and the world around them from the entertainment industry.

Senator Obama, as you well know, Poland suffered unimaginable losses at the hands of Nazi Germany and no other nation fought the Nazis as long and as valiantly as did the Poles while many countries continued to do business with Hitler and chose not to honor treaties to come to Poland’s aid.

Poland lost millions of her citizens in the murderous war and occupation. Her capital, Warsaw, was ruthlessly shelled, burned and bombed by the Germans until only rubble remained of historic homes, government buildings, hospitals and churches.

Poland was the only country in occupied Europe where the death penalty was imposed for harboring Jews. Often entire Polish families, including babies, were murdered by barbaric Germans when a Jew was discovered hiding in their home. And yet, contrary to anti-Polish propaganda, more Poles than people of any other nation came to the aid of Jews seeking shelter. Just count the number of “Polish” trees in the Righteous Among Nations Garden in the Yad Vashem.

The Fox Television Network, as well as the producers and writers of “Back to You” need to apologize not only to Polish Americans, but to all viewers who were subjected to this revisionism of world history – canned laughter is not a mitigating factor.

Senator Obama, we need your help in resolving this painful and slanderous matter.

The over ten million Americans of Polish descent will not forget your involvement.

Very sincerely yours,

Lucia Sliwa, Producer/Host

Subject: Fox Apology Insufficient

Nov.22, 2007
Hello,
As you can see in the attached letter, many of us have receive an apology from Fox for the defaming and insulting phrase “…Polish blood, like kielbasa, like collaborating with the Nazis…” that appeared on the Fox Network Show “Back to you”. I believe it is insufficient, as the apology reached only those who found the time to contact the FOX Company. In addition, some information on the Fox message board is available only for experienced web cruisers
(http://forums.fox.com/foxbacktoyou/start). FOX did not address millions of non-Polish viewers who were exposed to these derogatory words and lines of false history.
Therefore, we detailed in the attached letter our demand for FOX to (1) condemn derogatory statements; (2) announce publicly decisions regarding the people personally responsible for the racist phrase; (3) plan an educational FOX program on Poland’s contribution to World War II, and finally – (4) have the FOX President meet with WWII Combatants during an open meeting, possibly in Chicago.
We again mentioned the possibility of legal action as well as boycott of sponsors as introduced in first letter from Sunday, Nov. 17th.
Please note the delay in mailing this letter – I did hope that FOX would address some of these issues during the “Back to you” show on Wednesday, Nov. 21st. Instead, I saw a policeman firing a Taser gun toward a character named Crezyzewski. The actor played fell on the floor paralyzed by the high voltage delivered by the gun. Fortunately, this time it was only a show. In reality, just a few days ago, Canadian Police used a Taser gun and killed a 40yo traveler in Vancouver airport. He happened to be from Poland, visiting his mother in Canada. It is really distasteful that FOX writers and producers do not show minimal sensitivity trying to make jokes based on human tragedies.
If you share my feelings, please email or fax the letter to the FOX Executive Offices. You can mail it directly to Mr. Murdoch, owner of FOX Company. Please feel free to use this letter and forward it to your friends and colleagues, Americans and non-Americans. We all care at least about minimal standards on our national TV.

Mr. Joseph Earley
Executive Vice President
Fox Broadcasting Company
10201 West Pico Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90035

Dear Mr. Earley,
I, as well as others who protested the scandalous Fox “Back to you” phrase “…Bowling is in your Polish blood, like kielbasa and collaborating with the Nazis…” received an emailed apology from the Fox Broadcasting Company and 20th Century Fox Television. Although it can be considered as a step in right direction, it does not deal with the main issue of having proclaimed on a national basis a false, racist, and demeaning statement. Rather than emailing a form apology only to those that expressed their outrage with Fox, the Station should address the problem publicly, accept full responsibility for the remarks as well as correct the lie by providing an educational platform about Poland’s contribution to WWII. Your derogatory statements falsified WWII history. That phrase offended not only Poles, but all other viewers, including all Americans who were treated like an uneducated mass that could accept and laugh at all possible lies fed to them without blinking of an eye. No pasaran Mr. President! If we do not address these issues today, tomorrow this or other network would target different groups of people or nations. We must say STOP. This is my understanding of Solidarity.

We request the following steps from the Fox Broadcasting Company and 20th Century Fox Television:
1. Full and official public apology for defamatory and slanderous statements made on FOX TV. The Fox statement should be aired by Fox NEWS nationwide and appear before or immediately after subsequent “Back to you” show.
2. Public information about personal decisions regarding people responsible for this derogatory and racist phrase (authors, producers). I find it hard to believe that in the country that fired Don Imus for an inflammatory phrase a few months ago, no one is being held personally responsible for equating a whole nation with Nazi murderers.
3. Airing of an educational Program on FOX TV on Poland’s role in WWII in the form of mini series, studio discussion, or a movie, with participation of Polish historians and producers. This program should be aired during evening viewing hours and can include already existing materials like “Warsaw Uprising” or other documentaries, after consultation with Polish historians.
4. Meeting of President or Executive Vice President of Fox Company with Polish WWII Combatants. This public Meeting may take place in Chicago.

Again, please also be advised about the legal ramifications of the libelous statement of the Network, as well as the possibility of a massive worldwide boycott of your sponsors. In addition, I believe that someone in FOX management should look closer into your productions. The Nov. 21st “Back to you” episode showed a policeman using a Taser gun against the actor playing a Polish character, Mr. Crezyzewski. I hope you have heard that Canadian Police recently used a Taser gun and murdered in the Vancouver airport an innocent 40yo traveler, who happened to be from Poland. The entire incident is still being investigated. It is quite distasteful that your writers are trying to make jokes based on a recent human tragedy.

Sincerely,

Mr. Joseph Earley
Executive Vice President
Fox Broadcasting Company
10201 West Pico Blvd.,
Los Angeles, Ca 90035

Dear Mr. Earley:

On Wednesday, November 14, 2007 FOX TV broadcast an unprecedented, incredibly offensive and outrageous lie about Americans of Polish descend and the Polish Nation as a whole (“ it’s in your Polish blood, like kielbasa and collaborating with the Nazis”). That statement is deeply insulting, demeaning and an inaccurate portrayal of history.
It is outrageous that this remark was allowed to appear on a national show.

On September 1, 1939 Poland was brutally invaded by the Third Reich, and later on September 17, 1939 by the Soviets as whole world looked on, leaving Poland to defend for itself. Neither France nor Great Britain stepped in to help like had been promised. Although, the United Kingdom and France declared war on Germany, no direct military action was rendered. During World War II three million Poles and three million Polish Jews perished as a result of German occupation. Poland was the only country in occupied Europe where giving any kind of help to the Jews resulted in execution of the helper and his or her family. Despite such circumstances, thousands of Poles hide the Jews in their homes or helped to find another shelter and provided food for them. More Poles than people of any other nation came to the aid of Jews seeking safe place. The number of “Polish” trees in the Righteous Among Nations Garden in the Yad Vashem speaks for itself. Among 15 thousand trees from 34 nations, 5 thousand are Polish. The collaboration with the Nazis popular in different countries of Europe was unknown in Poland where there was no Polish Militias, no Polish SS Division and no Polish “Quisling”.

As the President of Polish Teachers Association in America, the organization that for 55 years has made a valuable impact on development of future generation of Polish Americans, I strongly protest against such untruthful statement and request full apology from the President of the Fox Network, its management and writers.

Sincerely,

Helena Ziolkowska
President of Polish Teachers Association in America

To Whom It May Concern:

I strongly protest the use of misleading and accusatory language that appeared and was broadcast on The Fox Television Network in “Back to you” episode on Nov. 14, 2007. I protest the use of the racist statements in any form that Poland and Polish people were collaborators with Germany’s Nazis. I do not believe even for a minute that the use of this statement “….it’s in your Polish blood, just like kielbasa and collaborating with the Nazis” in your episode has been made without malice. It was purposeful, racist, demeaning, and accusatory; to leave an impression with your program’s audience that Polish people collaborated with Germany’s Nazis. This is another attempt to rewrite history and historical fact. It was a conscious decision, approved on the highest level at FOX organization, and I hold YOU responsible for allowing such statement to be broadcasted. We have seen this kind of accusations made in the past with the venom like “that Poles suck in anti-Semitism with their mothers’ milk.” This is only continuance of the same venom, to ridicule and insult Polish people via media and to shape American public impression of Polish people and their nation, Poland, in a negative way.

I do not believe that the line was made be equal-opportunity offender, as I don’t believe that you would be employing uneducated mediocre actors, writers, analysts, proof readers, middle managers, managers, directors, and producers and FOX family executives. Within these ranks there is anti-Polish personnel with an agenda to undermine Poland’s achievements and put the blame for World War II on Polish people. Today you say Polish people were collaborators and tomorrow you will claim that Poles actually were the Nazis. Please forbid your program writes and producers to rewrite the history after 60 years, the true history has been already documented in various ways. I suggest you entire writing staff should acquaint themselves with the real history of World War II and the Polish struggles during this heinous period. I wonder if the following statement form Kate Tylor is reflecting what is happening right now when it relates to Polish people and Poland…..
“Holocaust revisionism is spreading, and not only among neo-Nazis,” Kate Taylor, of the anti-fascist publication Searchlight, told the BBC News website.
“As survivors are increasingly dying out it is much easier to hijack history for whatever cause or purpose.”
I would not want to think that this is what FOX Television Network is trying to do (“….to hijack history for whatever cause or purpose.”) under the guise of a comedy show….
SHORT HISTORY:

Of the 11 million people killed during the Holocaust, six million were Polish citizens. Three million were Polish Jews and another three million were Polish Christians and Catholics.

Even though the most heinous atrocities occurred in Nazi occupied Poland, it is rarely mentioned what has happened to millions of Poles during the World War II.
When Nazis invaded Poland, Poland was under total Nazi occupation, Poland stopped being a free country and its people were not free to make decisions about their lives and were subjected to humiliation, discrimination, torture and death. In spite all that, they were resisting the invaders and occupiers.
After the invasion of Poland on September 1st 1939, Nazis started public executions of hundreds of Polish community leaders, mayors, local officials, priests, teachers, lawyers, judges, senators, doctors. Much of the rest of the so-called Intelligentsia, the Polish leading class, was sent to concentration camps where they later died. Polish Christians and Catholics were actually the first victims of the notorious German death camp. For the first 21 months after it began in 1940, Auschwitz, the concentration camp in Nazi occupied Poland, was inhabited almost exclusively by Polish non-Jews. The first ethnic Pole died in June of 1940 and the first Jew died in October of 1942.
During the period of the Holocaust of World War II, Poland lost:
• 45% of her doctors,
• 57% of her attorneys
• 40% of her professors,
• 30% of her technicians,
• more than 18% of her clergy
• most of her journalists.
Poles fought the enemy on many fronts and in many countries. Warsaw, the capital of Poland was leveled by Nazi machinery and bombs, but the Polish people did not surrender like other counties at the start of the World War II. Poles were fighting the enemy from the West, Germany’s Nazis and enemy from the East, the Russians.
During the Holocaust the greatest number of Gentile rescuers of Jews were Poles, despite the fact that only in Poland were people immediately executed if caught trying to save Jews. The Yad Vashem museum in Israel founded in 1953, honors “the Righteous Among the Nations” “Gentile (non-Jewish) rescuers” and Poland ranks first among 40 nations with 6,004 men and women, honored for their “compassion, courage and morality” and who “risked their lives to save the lives of Jews.”
http://www1.yadvashem.org/righteous/index_righteous.html
This number is only reflecting the recorded cases, which does not include thousands of people, just like my grandparents and my father and his siblings who saved Jews, but were never registered that they risked their lives to save the lives of Jews.
Do YOU or your writers/producers consider these people collaborators?
DEMEND:

I, as a Polish-American have been greatly offended by your broadcast of the racist statement “…it’s in your Polish blood, just like kielbasa and collaborating with the Nazis“ and demand full apology in the following manner:

1) Public apology in the mainstream media on the national level in the form of News broadcast in the United States and Poland
2) Apology statement before airing the next “Back to you” episode
3) All Persons responsible for allowing this to be broadcasted, to be sent to sensitivity training
4) Assurance that this kind of demeaning, offensive language will not be included and aired again in any of your programs
5) Removing the content of offending statement from future distributions of this particular episode. (I wonder what can be done with this episode that viewers have recorded on VHS and/or TiVo)
6) Creating a program about Poland’s suffering during World War II that is consistent with the true history with conjunction of World War II survivors and historians like Prof. Nowak

I believe these are reasonable demands especially that Mr. Murdoch’s company has acquired TV Puls a regional station in Poland which is backed by News Corp and is trying to acquire additional frequencies having greater share of Polish media market. Doing anything less than what is demanded will only mean that the owners of FOX Media Conglomerate together with Mr. Rupert Murdoch willfully support anti-Polish agenda and revision of world history related to World War II.

There are international laws, in various forms, that state, that anyone denying Holocaust can be prosecuted, I believe that in the same line of thinking, the amend can be made to these laws stating “anyone that FALSELY accuse anyone of collaborating with Nazis shall be prosecuted.”
Holocaust denial is explicitly or implicitly illegal in 13 countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Israel, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Switzerland, and same should hold for false accusations of collaboration with Nazis.

If these demands will not be met in the satisfactory manner, we are ready to continue our protest in the form of letter writing campaigns to other print media including various television stations, boycotting your program’s sponsors and contacting various U.S. Politicians that seek our support in elections on local and national level.

Sincerely, Zbigniew Zbiegiel

Dear Mr. Earley,
I, as well as others who protested the scandalous Fox “Back to you” phrase “…Bowling is in your Polish blood, like kielbasa and collaborating with the Nazis…” received an emailed apology from the Fox Broadcasting Company and 20th Century Fox Television.

I find it hard to believe that in the country that fired Don Imus for an inflammatory phrase about hair texture, no one is being held personally responsible for equating a whole nation with Nazi murderers

2. Podanie do publicznej wiadomosci personalnych decyzji dotyczacych osob, odpowiedzialnych za rasistowskie i oczerniajace Polakow sformulowania (autorzy tekstow, redaktorzy programu).
3. Przygotowanie programu edukacyjnego na FOX TV o roli Polski i Polakow w II Wojnie Swiatowej, z udzialem polskich historykow. Program winien byc wyemitowany podczas wieczornych godzin „prime time”.

Dodatkowo – co trudne wrecz do uwierzenia – ostatni show „Back to you” pokazal policjanta, ktory celowal z elektrycznego pistoletu (Taser gun) do aktora z polsko brzmiacym nazwiskiem (Crazyzewski).

Jesli podzielaja Panstwo me poglady, prosze o podpisanie zalaczonego listu, wpisanie swego adresu i wyslanie do FOX TV poczta lub emailem (joe.earley@fox.com; ed.wilson@fox.com; scott.grogin@fox.com).

Mr. Joseph Earley
Executive Vice President
FOX Broadcasting Co.
P.O. Box 900
Beverly Hills, CA 90213

Dear Mr. Earley:

As you know, on November 14, one of the characters in Fox Television Network’s new show “Back to You” made comments (“….it’s in your Polish blood, like kielbasa and collaborating with the Nazis”) that are not only offensive to millions of Polish Americans but are also dangerously misleading and insidious.

Poland suffered unimaginable losses at the hands of Nazi Germany and no other nation fought the Nazis as long and as valiantly while many countries continued to do business with Hitler and chose not to honor treaties to come to Poland’s aid. Notwithstanding the impact these statements could have on the perpetuation of harmful stereotypes, the implications of these comments would also diminish the terrible suffering of millions of Christian Poles and Jews under German occupation, many of whom spent much of World War II in Nazi camps.

For more than twenty-five years, the Council has brought together leaders of the Jewish and Polish communities in America to discuss issues of common concern. The Council’s mission has always been, and remains today, to convene the leadership of the two communities on a regular basis to grapple constructively with their shared past and to shape better future relations, both in the United States and in Poland.

We appreciate the official apology your network made this week. We strongly believe that Fox Television Network carries important educational responsibilities in ensuring that American television is not used to ridicule any ethnic, religious, or racial group in the U.S. or elsewhere. We know that you share our deep concerns on this matter. We encourage Fox to implement programs and procedures to ensure, to the extent possible, that such incidents do not recur.

Please know that we stand ready to assist you in any possible way. We appreciate your consideration of our views on this matter.

Sincerely,

Martin I. Bresler Thaddeus C. Radzilowski

  1. Like most other Poles, I was outraged at that line in the show. Unfortunately, it seems that writing “scathing” letters to Fox have had little to no effect thus far.
Consequently I would like to support and/or participate in any larger scale initiative to extract the most elaborate apology possible from Fox.

I live in the Chicago area but don’t speak Polish so I cannot beneficially listen to your radio program.

However, if there are any serious efforts developing to pursue Fox I would appreciate being informed.

    Thanks,

  3. I am a young polish- american boy and i was shock to see that they were careless about the loss of Polish people during World war II

  4. I am deeply insulted by the remark that was made on Fox’s sitcom “BACK TO YOU.” Had it been a different nationality that this was said about, there would be more media attention and uproar about this matter; however, FOX issued no public apology and seems to be “brushing this matter off.” I believe that immediate attention should be taken toward what was said and appropriate actions should be taken to correct the racist remarks.
