Dear Senator Specter,<\/p>\n

As an American of Polish descent I am deeply offended and appalled by your crude attempt at ethnic humor at the Commonwealth Club Luncheon on Friday, December 12, 2008. Such vulgar behavior is certainly unbecoming for a United States Senator, especially one representing a state with a substantial Polish-American constituency.<\/p>\n

Your official web site biography states that you attribute your zeal for public service to your experience as a child when you \u00e2\u20ac\u0153saw the government mistreat your father\u00e2\u20ac\u009d. Mistreatment has many forms, Senator. Choosing to belittle and ridicule an ethnic group, while representing the U.S. Senate, is indeed mistreatment most vile.<\/p>\n

As a member of the media, I will follow this story in the hope that I can share with my listeners your statement of heartfelt apology.<\/p>\n

Pokazalo sie okolo 10 rak sposrod setek obecnych. Senator opowiedzial wiec kilka “Polish jokes” w tym jeden o facecie, ktory mial jakoby przerwac Mu powiastki, mowiac, “hej, careful. I’am Polish”. \nNiby nic, a jakze wiele… Wielu z nas slyszy rozne stare “Polish Jokes”. Chociaz niektore z nich maja swoje kulturowe uwarunkowania, to jednak w zdecydowanej wiekszosci bylyby niedopuszczalne, gdyby zamiast “Polacks” znalazly sie okreslenia innej narodowosci lub religii. Stad tez nadszedl czas, abysmy zareagowali na te pozbawione smaku zarty. US Senator nie powinien byc ich zrodlem.
\nW zalaczeniu przedstawiam propozycje listu, ktory wyslalem na adres Senatora, wraz z odpisami do polskich i amerykanskich wladz i instytucji, Czlonkow Komisji Etyki Senatu US oraz wielu osob, ktore moga byc zainteresowane problemem. Mysle, ze nadszedl czas, aby w sposob zdecydowany powiedziec, ze niektore zarty nie sa dowodem dobrego smaku.
\nJezeli uznajecie Panstwo Protest za sluszny, prosze o wysylanie faxem listu do Senatora. Zalaczony list jest jedynie propozycja dla Panstwa uznania. Dear Senator Specter,
\nI am writing to express my strongest objections against the tasteless jokes that were told at the Annual Commonwealth Club Meeting last Friday, as reported by several newspapers (http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/seven\/12132008\/gossip\/pagesix\/specters_strange_humor_143925.htm ). Your humor is insulting not only to the large group of Polish Americans but also to any person of Polish origin. In addition, as evidenced by the New York Post article, it is also considered tasteless by people of other religious, ethnic or cultural roots including the main stream media. It is time that jokes felt offensive and degrading by any nationalities, whether Irish, Italian, Japanese, Jewish, Polish, African American or any other ethnic, religious or cultural group, should be eradicated from public discourse. I would have expected that seasoned politicians with years of experience like yourself could lead that effort and provide the best example.<\/p>\n

As one of the 10 million of Polish Americans, I expect that a full apology addressing the insensitive \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Polish jokes\u00e2\u20ac\u009d will appear in New York and Pennsylvania media outlets (including New York Times and Philadelphia Inquirer). In addition, I implore you to meet with a group of Polish American leaders either in New York City, Philadelphia or Chicago to address Polish contributions to build the American Statehood during the last 400 years of Polish presence in the United States.<\/p>\n

I am writing to you as a fellow American who is deeply appalled by your
\nattempt at humor, at the expense of a race who helped get your seat in
\nSenate. It is disturbing that someone who has so much influence over the
\nwell being of our country can degrade a group of people in the manner that
\nyou have. It is not only unprofessional of you, but also immoral. This was a
\nvery bold move Senator, as the state of Pennsylvania has a very large Polish
\nAmerican population. Although the next election is a few years away, I can
\nassure you that this WILL affect the support of the Polish Americans, whom
\nyou referred to as slow. Poking fun at an ethnic group is just as
\ndistasteful as poking fun at a religion or a disabled person. Maybe someone
\nshould have spoke slower to you when you were being taught proper manners.
